Rumors abounded after Tim Paine stepped down. That rumor proved to be true. Pat Cummins became the first full-time captain in the history of Australian cricket.

Cricket Australia announced Cummins as its new Test captain on Friday. In this edition, he is the 47th team leader of Ajid. Steven Smith, who lost his lead in the 2016 ball tampering scandal, has been named co-captain.

Payne left the Australian Test team on November 19 after sending obscene pictures and messages to a female colleague four years ago. From then on, speculations were going on about the new captain.

A five-member committee was formed to decide who would lead. They only interviewed Cummins and Smith. The committee's recommendation was later approved by Cricket Australia.

Excited Cummins expressed his feelings thus, 'I am honored to have received this responsibility before an important Ashes summer. Hopefully, I will be able to give as much as the team (Payne) has led in the last few years.

"Pat (Cummins) is great as a player and as a captain," said Cricket Australia chief executive Nick Hawkley. He has earned a lot of respect from his teammates and all aspects of the game for his behavior and achievements on and off the field.

The last fast bowler to lead Australia in a Test was 65 years ago. Ray Lindwall took over as acting captain in 1958 in a match.
